Over Spent at Christmas? – worried about debt!
Monday, 10 January 2011 15:41
If you are worried about debt because of the cost of Christmas, rising fuel and food prices, the VAT rise or any other reason, there are a number of ways you can get help and support.
Falkirk Council has its own debt advice service, which can provide office appointments and home visits. There is also a well-established network of Citizen’s Advice Bureaux and there are a number of Credit Unions operating in and across the Council area.
While illegal money lending is not a significant problem in this area, the Scottish Illegal Money Lending Unit has had some reports of local activity in the recent past. At times like these, loan sharks can prey on the most vulnerable families and people and the impact of resorting to such lenders can have a devastating effect on families and individuals. The Scottish Illegal Money Lending Unit has been in operation since 2004 and aims not only to prosecute illegal lenders but also to provide a comprehensive advice and support service to the victims of those affected.
Councillor Angus MacDonald, SNP candidate for Falkirk East said:
"I woudl encourage anyone struggling with debt problems to get in touch with reputable and recognised organisations such as the Credit Union, the Council’s own debt and advice service or one of the local CABx. They can offer a range of professional advice and support to anyone experiencing financial problems.”
