Newly elected MSP for Falkirk East, Angus MacDonald, has welcomed confirmation from the BBC that BBC Alba is to be made available on Freeview from June 8th. It follows the decision by Virgin Media to broadcast the channel on cable from last week. Previously BBC Alba was only available via Sky or FreeSat meaning the majority of Gaelic speaking Scots were unable to tune in.
Angus MacDonald MSP, who was Convener of the successful Royal National Mod held in Falkirk in 2008, said:
“Following extensive lobbying I am delighted the BBC Trust has decided to allow BBC Alba on Freeview. This excellent news follows the decision by Virgin Media to broadcast BBC Alba on cable from last week.
“This is a major step forward for both the channel and the Gaelic language, and will allow everyone the length and breadth of Scotland the opportunity to access this excellent and important Scottish channel.
“BBC Alba is not only targeted at Gaelic speakers and learners – it has a great deal of output which non-Gaelic speakers will enjoy, however the channel will hopefully encourage more interest in our native language and will help to create a viable future for Gaelic by helping to ensure a sustainable future.
“I wish BBC Alba every success for the future.”
