Angus MacDonald, MSP for Falkirk East has congratulated the Braes High School debating team on their success, winning the Donald Dewar Memorial Debating Final, which was held in the Scottish Parliament chamber on Thursday. The winning team beat off competition from 128 schools around Scotland, and went on to thrash Glenalmond, Stewarts Melville and Kircudbright High on the night.
Angus MacDonald, who was present for the whole debate on Thursday night and cheered on the winning team saw Braes High School announced as winners in the chamber said:
"I was delighted to be present on Thursday night to see Braes High School win the Donald Dewar Memorial Debating Final in the Scottish Parliament chamber. Coincidentally it was the same day as my maiden speech in Parliament as the new MSP for Falkirk East so I guess we were all novices in the chamber.
"The contributions from Mairi McGinlay and Blair Wilson were outstanding, well-structured and thought provoking. For Braes High School to win through and beat over 128 schools is a fantastic accomplishment, and to beat the likes of Glenalmond and Stewart's Melville in the final was absolutely tremendous. The debate was "Youth over Experience". Indeed, it would seem that if Mairi and Blair decide to enter politics I will definitely have some competition on my hands, however they would both be welcome on our side of the chamber any day.
"I congratulated Mairi and Blair on the night, however I would also like to acknowledge the work of their coach, Mr Gilmour, who has helped them develop their debating skills over the past year or so.
"Congratulations to everyone involved once again - it was certainly a pleasure to witness in person yet another success for Braes High School."
