Falkirk East MSP Angus MacDonald has highlighted the commencement of this year’s festive drink and drug driving campaign. Tough new measures targeting first time offenders, those who refuse to provide a sample or those who are found to be three or more times over the legal limit have been introduced. A key sanction now allows seizure of an offender’s vehicle upon conviction as well as receiving a criminal record, a substantial fine and an automatic 12 month ban.
Commenting on the campaign Angus MacDonald said:
“Last year 7563 people in Scotland were caught driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, an average of around 20 offenders every day.
“It is hard to believe there remains such numbers of people willing to risk their lives and the lives of others.
“The Police Festive Campaign is now underway with increased road patrols targeting those who continue to drive under the influence of drink or drugs.
“Persistent hard core offenders must be reminded how dangerous and irresponsible drinking and driving is. The message is, drinking and driving is just not worth the risk”
