MACDONALD AND MEIKLEJOHN SLAM FALKIRK COUNCIL OVER MINIMUM WAGE JOBS

Falkirk East MSP Angus MacDonald and SNP Council Group Leader Cllr Cecil Meiklejohn have this week slammed the ruling Labour / Tory administration in Falkirk for advertising new vacant positions within the Council at the Minimum Wage rate of £3.68p (16-17 year old)£4.98 (18-21 year olds) £6.08 (above 21), not the Living Wage rate of £7.20p which was agreed by the Council prior to May’s local election.

The Council has advertised at least two jobs with temporary contracts offering the Minimum Wage. The first is for a Trainee Communications Assistant with HND or degree level qualification, with the second post being advertised for a Trainee Accounting Assistant, again requiring an HND or equivalent qualification.

Bowing to pressure from the SNP Group at Falkirk Council prior to the local election the ruling Labour / Tory administration were forced to agree to introduce the Living Wage of £7.20 per hour. However it is clear that Council leaders have failed to honour that commitment.

Condemning the Council over its failure to pay the agreed Living Wage, SNP Council Group Leader Cecil Meiklejohn said

‘It is appalling that Falkirk Council having made the decision to implement the living wage that it has still not been followed through, but sadly typical of this Labour/Tory administration.

The SNP first raised this as a notice of motion 3 years ago, and the then same coalition administration kicked it in to the long grass, only to bring it back later as a vague commitment with no timetable for implementation.

It was again the SNP who forced their hand earlier this year to agree to implement the living wage, like may other Councils who have already done so.

It is a sad indictment on the leaders of this council that they are treating their lowest paid employees in this manner; they should be ashamed of themselves.’

Falkirk East MSP Angus MacDonald said:

“Despite assurances given by the ruling Labour / Tory administration that, following pressure from the SNP, they would introduce the living wage for all low paid Council employees we are seeing the administration continue to advertise jobs paying the minimum wage rate.

“This is clearly unacceptable, especially when we see numerous SNP-led local authorities the length and breadth of the country introducing the living wage without any difficulty. Yet again, we are seeing another u-turn by the Labour / Tory cabal in Falkirk who are failing the workforce they previously pledged to support.

“This is not the kind of leadership the people of Falkirk district voted for in May. If Council leaders have any conscience they must honour their pledge and introduce the living wage for low-paid Council staff forthwith.”
