Falkirk East MSP Angus MacDonald has welcomed the awarding of a contract by Falkirk Council to build 44 flats and 12 new build houses at the former Grangemouth High School site at Tinto Drive in Grangemouth.
The contract, worth £5,354,559, has been awarded to Northern Irish firm O’Hare & McGovern Ltd.
A Scottish Government grant will be provided to assist with the total cost.
The new houses in Grangemouth will include a mix of 44 two and three bedrooms flats and 12 three and four bedroom terraced houses and are expected to be completed by October 2014.
Welcoming the awarding of the contract, Grangemouth’s MSP Angus MacDonald said:
“I’m extremely pleased that this project is finally moving forward, some 5 years after the old Grangemouth High School was demolished. The Scottish Government is contributing approximately £350,000 towards the cost of the new build. To date the Scottish Government has contributed over £1 million in grants towards the building of 40 new council homes in my Falkirk East constituency since the start of the Council’s new build programme at the following locations:
* Carse Crescent, Laurieston - 4 units, £100k Scottish Government grant
* Chisholm Place, G’mouth - 12 units, £300k Scottish Government grant
* Cadzow Avenue, Bo’ness - 24 units, £600k Scottish Government grant
“In addition to the funding for the 56 homes in Grangemouth’s Tinto Drive the Scottish Government has also provided a £1.2 million grant for 40 units at Parkhall Drive, Maddiston.
Angus MacDonald continued:
“Given that this latest contract has been awarded to a firm in Northern Ireland I will be seeking an assurance that Falkirk Council has ensured there will be local employment of the workforce through community benefit clauses to maximise the benefits of such a major contract locally”.
