FALKIRK DISTRICT YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT FALLS

21% DROP IN 16-19 YEAR OLDS CLAIMING JOBSEEKERS ALLOWANCE

Angus MacDonald MSP for Falkirk East welcomed figures showing a drop of 21% in the number of 16-19 year olds in Falkirk District claiming Job Seekers Allowance over the last year.

From September 2012 to September 2013 the number of 16-19 year old claimants fell from 435 to 345.

Mr MacDonald said:

“These  positive  figures  highlight  the  significant  progress  being  made  to  get  young  people into work. While times remain challenging and there is absolutely no room for complacency a 21% drop in the number of 16-19 year old claimants is a strong indication of progress.

“The  fact  that  not  one  of  Scotland’s  local  authority  areas  experienced  a  negative  change highlights  the  commitment  of  the  SNP  Government  to  addressing  the  scourge  of  youth unemployment.

“It is also a testament to the determination of Scotland’s young people; the findings highlight the fact that if you give young people in Scotland a chance they will grasp it.

“Scotland continues to outperform the UK as a whole in the critical area of youth employment, with more people in employment than the UK as a whole. It is clear that having the first ever dedicated  Youth  Employment  Minister  in  the  UK,  Angela  Constance  who  has  delivered measures like Opportunities for All that guarantees a place in work, training or education for young people who need it – is getting Scotland’s young people working again.”
