Falkirk East MSP Angus MacDonald has welcomed the announcement by Scottish Government Transport Minister Keith Brown this week that an extra £500,000 of funding will be given towards the development of a new £1.2 m visitor centre at the Kelpies canal hub between Grangemouth and Falkirk.
The funding for the ‘shovel ready’ project is in addition to the funding already allocated to Scottish Canals and will contribute further to regeneration and tourism around Falkirk district’s canal network.
Speaking in Grangemouth following the announcement, Angus MacDonald MSP said:
“This extra £500,000 funding is a welcome boost to an already exciting project which is nearing completion and is set to become a "Top Ten" visitor destination in Scotland.
“The funding will go some considerable way to improving the visitor experience at the Kelpies visitor centre, and will prove to be a major local asset as the Helix Park and Kelpies combined are expected to attract between 330-500,000 national and international visitors per year, and bring around £1.5 million into the local economy each year.
“I commend the vision of the previous SNP/Independent administration at Falkirk Council for moving this project forward at the early stages, conceiving the idea and securing the initial funding, and also congratulate the current Council administration for its continued commitment to the project which will prove to be a local asset of great community benefit for generations.”
