Angus MacDonald MSP slams Council decision to proceed with ‘Councillors Palace’ on casting vote
Falkirk East MSP Angus MacDonald has slammed the decision taken by the ruling Labour-Tory administration running Falkirk Council to plough ahead with a replacement Municipal Building in Falkirk. The controversial new £25 million headquarters were pushed through at a Full Council meeting on Monday on the casting vote of Labour Provost, Pat Reid, in the face of major public opposition.
Commenting following the Council vote, Angus MacDonald MSP said, “The decision taken by the ruling Labour-Tory administration to proceed with new Council headquarters highlights how out of touch with public opinion the current administration is.”
A former Falkirk Councillor himself, this is a subject close to Angus MacDonald's heart. The MSP for Falkirk East stressed that, “Not one constituent I have spoken to in the course of the past few weeks has been in favour of a new Council headquarters, with the vast majority saying this is the wrong time to proceed with such a vanity project.”
“Falkirk Council should be concentrating on building more social housing, not a Councillors’ Palace!”
“To add insult to injury", the MSP added, "given the local controversy this move will create, it was perhaps not the Provost’s finest hour in using his casting vote to railroad the plan through. This proposed ‘white elephant’ could well be the last act of a do-nothing, rudderless administration.”
Mr. MacDonald concluded, “With decisions like this being taken in the Council chamber, it is no wonder people are turning their backs on the Labour Party they thought they knew.”
