Assurances Given Regarding Safety Concerns in Falkirk’s PFI Schools

Falkirk East MSP Angus MacDonald contacted Falkirk Council to raise his concerns regarding this issue as soon as the devastating detail of the incidents in Edinburgh schools was revealed.

This week he received a letter from Gary Greenhorn, Head of Planning and Resources with Falkirk Council’s Education Department.

Mr Greenhorn stated that council officers have worked and liaised with PPP providers to undertake a range of structural inspections across the secondary school estate.  The council have been given assurances regarding the safety and structural integrity of the external walls.

In addition the design of external wall construction has been analysed of all school new builds and extensions over the last 15 years.  No concerns have been reported following these checks.

Mr MacDonald commented:

“The safety of pupils and staff is of paramount importance and must never be at risk so I was pleased to receive this response from Mr Greenhorn giving our local schools a clean bill of health.

“It is very reassuring to know that all schools in Falkirk have been constructed to industry standard and that they are structurally sound.

“I was also satisfied to hear from Mr Greenhorn that the school estate continues to receive both capital and revenue investment. This will allow for the regular assessment of the schools’ condition and for any maintenance and improvement work to be carried out.”
