SNP MSP for Falkirk East Angus MacDonald has, today (29th September) pledged his support to the Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) campaign.
State pension equalisation has been planned since the 1995, however the 2011 UK Pensions Act saw an accelerated pace applied to equalisation, meaning 2.6million women across the UK born in the 1950s were going to have an extra 5 years added to their retirement age, a move which angered many.
Mr. MacDonald, who was unable to visit the rally planned outside Holyrood due to an event he was hosting, said that he understood the frustrations felt by those affected and pledged his support in calling for the UK Government to act swiftly in order to resolve this situation.
Commenting, Angus MacDonald MSP for Falkirk East said:
“Once again the Tories have pulled the rug from under the feet of hard working people. We have seen elderly people and those who have disabilities severely affected by changes to the benefits system, and now we see women affected by this Tory Government playing fast and loose with people’s lives.
“What they need to realise is that a state pension is not a benefit; it is something which has been paid for as a result of decades of work. It is clear that the SNP have been the only team proactively finding solutions for the UK Government to implement. It is now up to the Tories to show their support for these women, who they are treating unfairly, and start living up to being a government for everyone, and not just for the privileged few.”
